Analysing change and continuity involves more than studying the causes of change. Students also learn to describe and analyse the extent of change, its nature and its speed. They also investigate patterns of change, trends over time and learn how to spot anomalies. They learn to look for the continuity within change and the changes within apparent continuity. In doing so they think about the meaning that people at the time gave to change; how they described it and made sense of it, or did not notice it as change at all. They can contrast that with the meaning that is placed on those events today. Analysing the processes of change and continuity enables students to understand the complexity of how the past is experienced and how humans give meaning to the world around them. It gives insights into diverse reactions and motivations. It enables judgements about key turning points and important trends.
